Intro
Wailing Whale is a two-player collaborative game, which both of them is helping the blue whale come closer to the pink whale by clapping hands. If the clapping waves matches with the pink whale's wave, she will be happy and swimming closer. I worked as artiest and co-producer in this project. I was in charge of designing and making the Maya model of the blue whale, and I also did the rigging and swimming, jumping animation for the whale. Our two artists and programmer worked a lot with sound person to make sure players' clapping sounds, whale's animation and wave rings work harmonious with the background sound beats. |
Design
I and other producer took notes during meetings. First we discussed in team and did brainstorm to find a list of ideas, then we met our advisors to talk about advantages and constrains for each of them. We finally chose this Multi-player clapping idea because it is simple and fun for both player. Then we did some paper prototype for the game. For example, we draw some of the instruction part, and we listed all elements during the game play. In our story background, the blue whale is a ugly but friendly male whale, which want to became friend with the pink whale. Thus I designed him with some uneven teeth and big eyes, to make him looks stupid but not evil. |
Iterate
We did a lot of play test and changed the color of waves several time, because the test results showed players may get confused by the color, but the final version still not working as well as we thought. For improvement, if we have more time, we will definitely try some other color combination, and make the color matching mechanism as clearly as possible. For example, we are thing about use some colors other than blue and pink(which are the colors of two whales), to make sure players won't confused by the whales' color. |
